How Salt-Free Systems Work
This system uses phosphate technology to control scaling and corrosion caused by hard water. It works by bonding with hard water compounds (such as calcium and magnesium carbonates) and inorganic metals (iron, copper, zinc) to reduce existing scale formation without the use of dangerous chemicals and create a protective nanolayer to inhibit carbonate scaling and corrosion.
Despite preventing hard water scaling and corrosion, the Active Armour system does not use water softening technology. Where water softeners use salt and an ion exchange process to physically remove water hardness, a salt-free system prevents hardness compounds from sticking to themselves or other exposed metal components.
Active Armour has four food-grade phosphate compounds used as boundary-zone scale inhibitors that provide corrosion control for metallic piping and heat-contact surfaces. Phosphate technology has been used safely in the United States and applied municipally, commercially, and residentially for almost 70 years.
For residential applications, a typical dosage is 0.25–1.55 ppm. However, the recommended maximum limit for water treatment is up to 13 ppm. This means that your maximum phosphate consumption in a standard glass of water, or 12 fl. oz., would be around 0.5 mg. By comparison, the same intake of Coca-Cola contains 60 mg of phosphate, while a large egg contains 95 mg of phosphate.
